Reflections on AWE EU 2024 – The Future of XR Comes to Life

Studio News
November 4, 2024

AWE EU 2024 in Vienna delivered a captivating experience, showcasing where XR is headed and how fast it’s evolving. With cutting-edge tech on display, insightful sessions, and industry leaders like Meta, Niantic, and Unity in the mix, it’s clear that immersive technology is gearing up for an exciting future.

Key Highlights from AWE EU 2024

  1. Niantic’s Splat System: Revolutionising Location-Based Experiences
Niantic continues to push the envelope with its advanced tools for creating immersive, real-world XR experiences. One standout is their Gaussian Splat system, a breakthrough approach that captures real-world scenes using millions of tiny, independent “splats” instead of traditional polygons. This method enables creators to turn real locations into ultra-realistic 3D environments, captured in stunning detail, and imported as splat files into Niantic Studio. For us at Sugar Creative, this opens up exciting new opportunities in location-based AR. By integrating splats with our 8th Wall projects, we can create immersive environments that bring real-world locations to life in photorealistic detail, accessible directly through WebAR.
  2. Hands-On with XR Wearables: Meta Ray-Bans and Snap Spectacles
Testing out the latest XR wearables was a real highlight. Meta’s updated Ray-Ban Stories and the newest Snap Spectacles bring XR closer to mainstream, with more intuitive interfaces and lightweight designs. Meta also teased upcoming Orion AR glasses, offering a vision of smart eyewear that fits seamlessly into daily life. With advancements in real-time content delivery and interactivity, these devices are becoming versatile tools for both personal and professional use, and they’re evolving quickly to provide richer, more interactive experiences.
  3. Exploring New Tech: Logitech’s XR Pencil and Senmag Robotics’ Haptic Stylus
Among the new tools on show were Logitech’s XR Pencil and Senmag Robotics’ Haptic 9D Stylus, which promise to transform how we interact with XR environments. The XR Pencil offers high-precision control for design work, while Senmag’s stylus provides tactile feedback in multiple dimensions, simulating textures and resistance that make digital interaction feel much more real. These tools signal a leap forward for industries like design, training, and simulation, where fine control and physical feedback are essential.

Thought-Provoking Talks and Global Collaboration

The speaker lineup at AWE EU 2024 was packed with insights and future-focused discussions. Ori Inbar’s keynote set the stage, noting how XR technologies are expanding into new sectors. Following this, Meta’s Amone Gbedemah highlighted how AI integration in their XR devices will shape future digital interactions, especially through applications in corporate training and education. Niantic’s Kit Gilbert presented a compelling vision for a “connected world” through AR, encouraging us to think of the real world as a canvas for shared experiences. It was inspiring to see so many ideas focused on bringing people together rather than isolating them in digital bubbles.

A Memorable Setting in Vienna

Vienna was the perfect host city for AWE. The stunning architecture, spotless streets, and delicious food only added to the event’s charm, making the experience outside the conference just as enjoyable. Despite the challenges of travel (the flights were a story in themselves), Vienna’s welcoming atmosphere made it all worthwhile.

Wrapping Up

AWE EU 2024 was a powerful reminder of where XR is headed. From Niantic’s Splat system to Meta’s strides in wearables and the debut of new haptic tech, the event was a testament to how immersive technology is becoming more integrated into our daily lives. We’re excited to explore how Sugar Creative can apply these developments, especially as we continue to partner with innovators like Niantic.
